What is special about this mitzvah? Shmitta is the longest time-sensitive commandment in the Torah, lasting exactly one year.
Who is behind the initiative? Shomrei Shvi’it is the project of three G-d fearing, Torah observant Jews in Israel who wish to increase the public's knowledge and practice of shmitta observance.
How was the idea conceived? For many years, two Shomrei Shvi'it organizers have learned Torah together during the entire night of Shavuot. This past Shavuot, the two were learning the laws of shmitta and came up with the idea of Shomrei Shvi’it.
Does the project have rabbinical sanction? A broad range of leading rabbis and halachic authorities from across the observant Jewish spectrum have given their blessing to the project. For a full list of such endorsements, click here.
